CHAPTER 13: LEISURE, FITNESS AND FUN

Morocco has an ideal climate for year-round sports enjoyment. Every morning, women walk along the beach and through the Anfa and Ain Diab neighborhoods to keep fit. Morocco’s leading sports are football (soccer), basketball and athletics. There are football matches Sunday afternoons from October to June in several stadiums in the city. Horse races are held on alternate Saturday and Sunday afternoons in winter at the Anfa Hippodrome and there are dog and cycle races at the Vélodrome.

Golf

Morocco has beautiful golf courses. Membership in the Royal Golf Club d’Anfa-Mohammedia (36.10.26 or 36.53.55) entitles you to use both the 9 hole Anfa course and the 18 hole Mohammedia course. There are tennis courts and a swimming pool at the Anfa Club. If you have been a member of another golf club, bring a copy of your membership card and your handicap card. The waiting list can be long and the membership fees high. There are also courses in Rabat, Tangiers, Agadir, Marrakech, El Jadida, Ben Slimane and Settat. The course in El Jadida is considered the nicest in Morocco. It is only one hour from Casablanca and there is no waiting list.

Horseback Riding

Moroccans prize horses: so much so, that horses are not gelded. It’s helpful to be aware of this when seeking riding lessons for children since stallions can be difficult for youngsters to handle.

Skiing

The skiing season runs roughly from December to April. Oukaimeden is an hour and a half by car from Marrakech and has excellent and challenging runs. The Chalet Oukaimeden offers skiing, hiking, speleology, canoeing and kayaking. The Ifrane area has three ski areas; Michliffen (20 minutes ride from Ifrane), Djebel Hebrei (10 minutes beyond Michliffen) and Djebel Abri (5 minutes towards Azrou from the Michliffen Highway.) For more information, contact the Club Alpin, 1 Rue Aknoul (ex Rue General Henrys), Casablanca Tel: 27.00.90 (Thursday evenings).

Swimming

There is a dangerous undertow on many beaches and extreme caution is recommended when swimming in the ocean. The summer months record several deaths every year. During the summer, there are lifeguards along the coast with rescue boats. Also during the summer, numerous beach clubs along the coast (Corniche), with large pools, children’s pools, dressing rooms and snack bars or lunch counters are open to the public, for an entrance fee, either by the day or by the season. The C.C.C. or Sun-Beach is a very popular and expensive private club. It is open all year for members only. Miami Fitness Club is also very nice and offers a wide variety of activities, in addition to year-round swimming. There are three indoor swimming pools at the Stade d’Honneur, which is open all year. It is closed on Sundays. Some of the tennis clubs also have pools.

Fishing and Hunting

Deep sea and beach fishing along the Atlantic coast is good. Trout fishing is good in many streams, especially in the Ifrane/Azrou area, where pike, perch and black bass can also be hooked. Good hunting exists with a variety of game including duck, rabbit, partridge, pheasant, turtle dove, quail and wild boar. Hunting trips can be arranged with Sochatour (31.47.19) or with Mafishco (26.96.05.) Be sure to obtain the necessary permits from the Prefecture before setting out on a hunting trip.

Short Excursions

A day at the beach

Between Mohammedia and Rabat there are a number of beaches including:

Between Casablanca and El Jadida:

Cascade de Mizab Between Casablanca and Rabat. Turn inland from the Autoroute at Ain Harrouda. Continue several kms to Oued El Hassar. Waterfalls. Small restaurant.

Rabat About 95 kms north of Casablanca. There are many places of interest worth visiting including the Kasbah of Oudaia, the Museum of Moroccan Arts, the medina, the Tomb of Mohamed V and Hassan II, the Tour Hassan and the Archaeological Museum which houses the excellent collection of Roman bronzes from Volubilis, and the Chellah. Both museums are closed on Tuesdays.

Salé Just across the BouRegreg river from Rabat. It has several sights of interest, including the Bab Mrisa, the Medersa El Hassan and a big arts and crafts pottery complex where the well-known Salé pottery is made and fired in kilns.

Azemmour 83 kms south of Casablanca. A small unspoiled town perched on the left bank of the Oum Er Rbia near its mouth. In the early morning there is a fine view of the ochre walls and white houses reflected in the river. Visit the kasba and the ruined Dar El Baroud (la maison de la poudre.)

El Jadida 99 kms from Casablanca and south of Azemmour. It is noted for its fine beaches, its 16th century ruins, an old Portuguese fort and the large underground cistern. It has Morocco’s finest golfing, a port and a large energy plant.

Boulaouane There is a ruined kasbah built in 1710 by Moulay Ismail which sits high above a bend in the Oum Er Rbia River with fine views from the ramparts. The kasbah is about an hour and a half from Casablanca off the road to Marrakech, beyond Settat.

Oualidia 80 kms south of El Jadida. It is a small seaside town on a lagoon with a pleasant beach. Great for small children and famed for its oysters.

Ben Slimane Picnic at Oued Mellah Dam. This is located about half way between Ben Slimane and Casablanca. Ben Slimane also has go karting and golfing; see following section.

African Botanical

Gardens On the road from Rabat to Kénitra, on the left just after passing the nurseries. A French botanist collected plants and trees from across Africa and used a fair-sized plot of land to create his gardens. It’s shady, not too crowded, a little run-down and is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon out.

Hawaii Camping

International This is a simple campground that you can visit for the day. It is 28 kms drive out of Casablanca on the route d’Azemmour on the right. 3 kms past the Welcome to Province de Settat sign. It has volley ball, tennis, playground, 3 pools, shady picnic areas, and beach access. Watch carefully for the sign.

Other Activities for Children and Families

For older children the countryside and cities outside of Casablanca are an incredible history lesson with Roman ruins, early Phoenician settlements, kasbahs, and camel caravans. In addition to the sports and leisure activities already mentioned, consider some of the following for your children and family.

Dawliz Complex: On the Corniche (39.69.43) Occasionally has children’s films in French (little children don’t mind) and other films four times a day: 14:15; 17:00; 19:30; 22:00. There are 4 theaters and 4 films showing daily. Programs change every wednesday.

Scouts: (Boys and girls) The troops are sporadic, depending on the level of parent involvement. Check with someone at the AIWC. For Scouts de France, contact Casa Accueil.

Zoo: This is always a popular outing for children. It is in Temara on the way to Rabat. Open 10am. Saturday mornings are the best time to go. There is a small admission fee. There is also a small zoo in Casablanca on the coast road to Rabat.

Forêt Récréative

de Bouskoura: On the road to the airport. Walks, picnics, jogging, bike riding and other forest–type activities. There are several unmarked entrances after the first that are less frequented and more mature sections of the forest.

Sindibad Amusement

Park: Sidi Abderrahman, on the Corniche to the south-west. You can’t miss the giant Sindibad statue. There is a small entrance fee and rides are extra. Very affordable.

Go Karting: Atlantic Karting (36.66.66) next to Sindibad Amusement Park offers go karts, pool, video games, and a snack bar. The entrance fee is 15 DH weekdays and 20 DH weekends, plus game fees. VGK in Benslimane (Take the auto route toward Rabat, get off at the Mohammedia East exit and take the road to Benslimane 2 kms - 03.30.12.33). VGK also offers volleyball, rollerskating (planned) and a restaurant.

Train Rides: For 25 DH you can take a train ride from the Oasis station (or Casa Port) to the airport. It takes half an hour and is an opportunity to look at planes, eat ice cream or Dunkin Donuts and take the train home. In the summer, there is a mini-train, which operates on the Corniche.

Playlands: There are playgrounds at the McDonalds on the Corniche and Mers Sultan. There are also several small amusement parks – playlands around town including Parc Yasmine on Bd. Moulay Youssef in the Arab League Park.

Hobbies

The same way sports refresh some, hobbies refresh others. Maybe it’s time to learn something new! For some hobbies, including painting and music, see also the Chapter on Culture, Language and Entertainment. Many of the Cultural Centers offer lessons. See the section on keeping fit for hobbies such as dance and yoga. For those who like to cook, Casa Accueil, (see the Chapter on Social and Service Clubs), often offers international cooking lessons. AIWC also offers cooking classes from time to time.
