CHAPTER 9: PHYSICIANS AND CLINICS
There are many very good doctors and dentists in Casablanca. Those listed below have been used by some of our members or suggested by the U.S. Consulate Health Unit. We cannot endorse any physician or person on this list. All speak French, and English speakers have been noted. The names are not listed in any particular order.
Labs, Clinics and Pharmacies
Laboratories are usually privately run and provide diagnostic tests as requested by physicians and clinics. These services could include blood analysis, urinalysis, parasitology tests, and infertility testing. Become familiar with lab locations since you are required to take specimens to the lab from the doctor or clinic yourself.
Clinics are privately owned facilities while hospitals are public. Clinics have a specialty doctor on call and emergency service. You may be required to pay up front, upon admittance, which can prove to be difficult in an emergency, or immediately after surgery. Be sure to bring cash unless you’ve received permission to pay by check in advance.
If you have surgery planned you may have a stock of your blood, or that of a family member or friend’s drawn ahead of time at the Blood Bank Rue Jenner (near Ibn Rochd Hospital) 26.45.32.
It’s a good idea to locate and visit a clinic or two as you settle in Casablanca- BEFORE you need one.
Many pharmacies will sell prescription drugs over the counter, (although never narcotics or others subject to abuse or addiction) even without a doctor’s prescription (ordonnance), but be very careful not to self-medicate! Health conditions change and the medicine which may have worked last year may not work now. Moroccan and French doctors rely heavily on prescription medications. Every night and weekend, at least one pharmacy stays open all night. The name is posted at all pharmacies and is also indicated in the newspapers.
